U20 CAM TOWER SHIMS

High Quality Aluminum. These Cam Tower Shims are precision machined. Cam Tower Shims are used to make the upper chain tight again when a cylinder head has been overly-planed. It should be noted that most of the time cylinder heads are surfaced on the bottom. However, there are times when they are surfaced on the top. It may be necessary to use our shims in conjunction with one of our thicker head Gaskets to restore accurately the same amount of material to each side of the cylinder head that was removed. Use the guide below to determine how much has been surfaced off the top of your cylinder head.

GUIDE: This is a simple guide to determine what size cam tower shims you need or if you need them at all. When a cylinder head becomes warped the top will warp up in the center like a banana. Most, not all, machine shops will surface the top of the cylinder head to get the head flat again. A good machine shop will always minimum surface the cylinder head to make it flat and not be arbitrary about how much they will remove. After checking and shimming the fixture holding the head, they will pass the cutter over the warped area removing the excess material. In performing this procedure all of head bolt hole recesses, the ones on top of the head NOT the cam towers, in the center area, will be less in depth than the two head bolt recesses at each end of the cylinder head. The depth of the holes are measured from the, top, machined surface of the cylinder head casting to the, bottom, machined surface of the head bolt hole. A little tricky to compute the number at the front of the cylinder head.
Subtracting the depth of the center holes from the following number: .480 will give you how much has been surfaced off the top of the cylinder head in its life time.EXAMPLE: Depth of the inboard holes .440 subtracted from .480 = .040 shims needed. To configure whether you need a thicker head gasket you would use these numbers in relation to the original thickness of a U20 cylinder head which is 4.528 to compute what was surfaced off the bottom. It is possible to have more surfaced off the bottom of the head than the top. Click here, to view the thicker U20 head gasket.

NOTE:Please also look at PART# 2551 to determine if you need thicker lash pads if you are using a re-ground cam or thicker cam tower shims.

U20 High Performance Block Stud & Nut 10 piece kit. Far superior to original head bolt method of fastening the head to the block. No needless re-torquing of the head required. NOTE: Re-use your old washer set as this kit does not come with washers.

Rated at a tensile strength 190,000 to 200,000 PSI. Material 8740 Chrome moly. U.S. made. These studs have a hex in the end to allow the user to run the studs down into the block. 12 point flat bottom nuts included.
These studs eliminate problems associated from head bolt use. Common problems include bolt breakage, block and thread damage, less clamping force and bolt stretch, constant re-torquing of cylinder head, rear oil gallery leakage. Keep that head from moving around. General fastener torque spec. 80 Ft Lbs Ultra torque lube. Be sure to add on Ultra torque lube Part# 2464 when purchasing this kit.

INSTRUCTIONS: Please be sure to tap out the block before installing with a 7/16" X 14 tap. These are studs are a free floating fastener so it is not necessary to Lock Tite or bottom them out and torque the studs into the block. However, it is important to have as much threaded engagement in the block as possible. The stud should not pass through the nut. Doing so will lessen the threaded engagement of the stud in the block.

SPECIAL NOTE: Original U20 head bolts were un-heat treated and have a tendency to stretch and or break off in the block. Early head bolt head diameter measures .622. Later, better quality, replacements that are currently available are $240.00 for the complete set and they measure .702. If you have the early head bolts we strongly recommend replacement with our stud kit.

SPECIAL NOTE: All of the head bolts on the passenger side of the block are the same length. It is not necessary to be concerned about the stud length where the, cylinder head, locating dowels are placed. We have found that there is enough, threaded engagement in the block, to allow a proper torque.

NOTE:Please also look at PART#'s 1152 & 2551, for important information, to determine if you need thicker lash pads if you are using a re-ground cam or thicker cam tower shims.

67 1/2 - 70 U20 Chrome moly steel w/heat treating valve retainer for 11/32 valves - set of 8. Chrome moly retainers w/heat treating are safer when using higher spring rates for race applications as the heat treating is through the entire part. It is especially important in the area where the valve collets reside where greater strength is not only desired but required. All 3 retainer sets allow the use of a variety of different thickness L-series lash pads on a U20 motor to enable the user to dial in after-market camshafts. The Schneider Cams, high hat, integral one piece design offers excellent side support for tall lash pads, (SEE PHOTO) was preferred and highly sought after for street use and in the racing community. Tried & true. Hundreds & hundreds of the 11/32 U20 versions of these beauties were sold with no issues, thousands of the L-series 8mm valve version were sold in the open market as well. Retainer accepts L-series lash pad thicknesses up to .300. Nissan & Our aftermarket style retainer sets installed height are 1.620 as per correct & proper original Nissan U20 specification. All spring forces and heights are the same as the original Nissan retainer. Isky spring set installs at 1.700.

Formula to determine approximate lash pad thickness required: Original lash pad thickness for the stock U20 cams = .078. Re-ground cams have a reduced base circle. Some camshafts have a base circle that is very reduced. The important thing to remember from this is to check each re-ground camshaft to get the proper lash pad thickness required. We can help you choose the correct lash pad to get you in the ball park. Other factors that will effect what size lash pad to use are related to the actual rocker arms being used. Not all rocker arms are made exactly the same and can vary from rocker arm to rocker arm. Depth of the valve seats, installed height of the valves can also effect what size lash pad should be used to obtain the correct "wipe area" on the rocker arm and the correct "lift value at the valve". The following is an example to show the math involved in determining the correct lash pad thickness required. FORMULA: Use the following example and plug in your own numbers. Base circle diameter of your camshaft .___ subtracted from the constant 1.310 = .____ divided by 2 = ___ + original lash pad thickness of .078 = ___ new lash pad thickness starting point. Select a lash pad thickness from our stock as close to this thickness as possible.

Datsun Roadster U20 Performance Solex C Cam

An original, 13001-25510, Nissan C camshaft was profiled by a prominent cam grinder who was responsible for supplying performance grind camshafts to various Nissan racing teams of the 60's and 70's. An identical master of the profile was made from original Nisan C cam (SEE PHOTO). The exclusive master was contracted so as to grind U20 cam cores to the identical Solex C specification. Included with each camshaft is information regarding a recommended starting point for the lash pad thickness required for the specific cam you will be receiving. Each lash pad set will differ as the base circle can vary slightly on cam cores. The lash pad thickness for the C cam is most often slightly more than the stock thickness lash pad.

The most significant difference between the Solex B and the Solex C camshafts are mainly in the duration of the camshafts. The lift value is slightly more than the B profile. Since Nissan supplied this camshaft in their Motorsports catalog its intended use was to be with the U20 Solex 4 barrel induction kit that was in production at the time. I have personal experience with this camshaft and it is quite different than the Solex B cam. It is not a full race cam and is completely acceptable for use on the street.

No longer necessary to purchase, difficult to seal, all copper head gasket, messy and marginal double head gasket method to compensate for overly planed cylinder head castings. Have you priced out a new U20 cylinder head these days? How about $1800.00. None of these choices are really an option, except for the new cylinder head which may not be in your budget. We have a affordable option!

This all new gasket is .135 thick compared to the Nissan stock gasket which measures .053 at the fire ring.

Why buy a thicker head gasket? During a U20 cylinder heads lifespan it can be surfaced many times to the point where the head is nearly unusable. If your head has been overheated and warped it requires either oven straightening, expensive, or a re-surfacing of both sides of the head in order for it to be flat again. Because both sides need to be surfaced the head becomes thinner. Customers and shops often correct the reduction in overall head thickness by piling cam tower shims under the towers to "get the chain tight". The problem is that this can affect the geometry between the cam and the rocker arms. Yes, this can be corrected with different U20 custom retainers that accept taller L-series lash pads of various thickness. Even with a custom retainer package this still does not solve the problem of diminished chamber volume on the head gasket side resulting in higher compression and detonation.

This new gasket gives you the opportunity to correct the issue of a overly planed cylinder head by putting the height back where it was removed. Use this in conjunction with our cam tower shim sets to get the right combination.

We recommend that you purchase a tube of the special silicone we sell part#2402 to help seal the front timing cover area and the rear oil gallery of the cylinder head gasket

Gasket construction and properties: High performance graphite facing, much like the Nissan stock gasket, on a perforated carbon steel core. Stainless steel fire rings installed at each bore. Graphite has excellent sealing, conform ability and high temperature resistance.

Datsun Roadster, set of four, smog plug inserts for 68 -70 1600 and 2000 cylinder heads.

These inserts were reverse engineered to screw into the ports in the head where the air injectors were installed as smog equipment. They have the exact thread and contour of the injectors and fill the entire cavity; both the threaded portion and the smooth bore. This completely eliminates that annoying “chirping” sound caused by engine exhaust passing over the tube, which creates a resonant chamber (like a badly played flute). Once installed, you’ll be amazed at hearing only the smooth hum of the exhaust out the tailpipe. The clucking chicken in your engine will be dead and gone! Does not include clucking chicken. Comes with a full detailed instruction sheet.
NOTE: Another option is not Allen plugs Allen plugs do not have a chamfer to meet the angled machined area at the bottom of the casted hole in the cylinder head nor do they have an extension on the end to close off the smaller id hole where the pipe used to fit. These areas are what cause the chirping noise. Our inserts have these necessary additions. They were designed, blueprinted and manufactured for a specific purpose.

Heat treated, correct width for stock U20 retainer, lash pad sets. Works great with re-ground cams with reduced base circles, to correct the geometry between the rocker arm and the camshaft lobe. Selecting the correct thickness allows one to match the theoretical lift on paper with the actual dial indicated lift during mock up and assembly. Since there are no L-series lash pads under .150 thick available these lash pads will work with camshafts that require thicknesses less than .150 in order to obtain the correct wipe area, lift etc. of the cam you are using. Keep your upper tensioner tight and prevent the deadly death rattle that accelerates wear to your, expensive to replace, timing parts. A tensioner that sticks out to far will have to fill each time, thus moving from the relaxed position to the fully, extended hydraulic position, each time the engine starts, with the result of a rattling chain slapping against the guide rails and sprockets. Great little kit for those of you that can't afford new pieces or have worn pieces or an overly planed cylinder head resulting in the tensioner shoe sticking way out.
Directions: Start and run the engine until the oil gauge shows pressure, usually about 15 seconds to 30 seconds. The tensioner is last in line to receive oil pressure. Remove the valve cover and the front access cover. The upper tensioner should be tight against the chain and the chain should be tight on the other side of the cam sprocket. Measure the distance between the back of the shoe and the front of the cast tensioner housing and take note of the distance. Take one of the zip ties and work it through the front of tensioner and loop around the cast housing. Pull and tighten the zip tie as tight as you can make it. Put a rag underneath the tensioner area to keep the bolts from falling down into the engine. Loosen the two bolts and extract the tensioner. Hold the tensioner and cut the zip tie and remove the shoe. Add the washers included in the kit to make up the distance you measured. Put the other zip tie around the assembly and tighten. Reassemble the tensioner/spring, with the gasket supplied, into the engine and tighten down the bolts. Cut the zip tie and assemble the access plate with the new gasket.
